Efforts to maintain moderate, nonpartisan and rational leadership in our region are very important to us as MainStream Coalition members and MAIN*PAC donors. The MainStream Coalition has been fighting a wave of conservatism since the mid-1990s.
Following Newt Gingrich's Conservative Revolution on 1993, many of our moderate yet progressive leaders left the political arena or were defeated. The MainStream Coalition, and later, MAIN*PAC, were founded by people who were deeply troubled by the rising power of political and religious leaders from the far right.
Our state, our region, and our country have taken a sharp turn to the right politically. MAIN*PAC seeks to be a counter voice to these prevailing political winds. We also aim to be a moderate counter voice. We are not interested in governance from extreme positions.
Your support of MAIN*PAC will be used to support moderate candidates, regardless of party, who support the moderate principles and perspectives of the MainStream Coalition and our members.
MainStream Political Action Committee (MAIN*PAC) members have united to provide information about and support those candidates, regardless of party affiliation, who support the goals and positions of the MainStream Coalition.
In 1998, the MainStream Coalition formed its own Political Action Committee (PAC) in order to be able to work more effectively in the political arena. For the first time, MainStream ideas could be used to evaluate and endorse candidates.
Some members of the MAIN*PAC Board serve on the MainStream Coalition Board, but many do not. This gives MAIN*PAC the benefit of broad community awareness whenever the Board urges community or political action.
In accordance with our by-laws, the MAIN*PAC Board is co-chaired by persons who identify and are registered members of the two primary parties, Democratic and Republican. We strive to keep the MAIN*PAC Board as balanced as possible between the two parties. We seek to be a bi-partisan group with a nonpartisan mission.
